What Is Rosacea And How It Is Misunderstood

PLEASE SHARE:

Rosacea is undoubtedly one of the most misunderstood conditions today. Doctors and patients alike often confuse rosacea with acne. Meanwhile, the symptoms and appearance of rosacea may bear resemblance to acne, both conditions are quite different.

People with rosacea will often experience some or all of the symptoms outlined below:

  • Facial redness on the cheeks, forehead, nose or chin
  • Blood vessels which may be small but quite visible on your face
  • Small pimples around your face
  • Bloodshot, irritated or even watery eyes

Rosacea is not a life-threatening condition in any way, but the millions of people affected by it are certainly lacking in self-esteem. It is visible and can be a cause for embarrassment.

Unfortunately, if left untreated, rosacea can become worse. Rosacea isn’t always visible on the face, but one of its main characteristics is that many flare-ups occur which are caused by simple triggers such as stress, certain foods and beverages, or even weather.

Approximately 14 million Americans suffer from rosacea today and it affects mostly women aged 30 to 60. Many Americans suffer from rosacea, but only small handfuls really understand the condition or are even aware that they have it.

Rosacea often starts out as facial redness and will often become worse over time. It can also make its presence known through visible blood vessels on the cheeks and in serious cases, the nose may become swollen.

Rosacea patients often find that their skin is riddled with dry and flaky patches as well as swollen in different places. The eyes are often affected as well. People who suffer from rosacea may often find that their eyes are constantly bloodshot, irritated and watery. It is not unheard of to find excessive redness around the eyes as well.

The medical community is still to this day unsure as to what causes rosacea. There are plenty of theories of course, but none have yielded enough scientific evidence to provide proof of its connection with rosacea.

Rosacea could possibly be:

  • Oversensitive blood vessels in your face
  • A genetic problem passed down through generations
  • A stomach infection caused by a bacteria known as H. pylori
  • An excessive amount of mites that naturally live on your skin’s surface

scientificThe most recent explanation for rosacea comes from a study conducted by Dr. Richard Gallo in which he conducted several experiments and came to the conclusion that rosacea may indeed be a malfunction of the immune system.

In his study, he has found that certain immune system proteins may be responsible for rosacea. These proteins end up triggering the rosacea symptoms in a fight to protect your body against diseases.

Rosacea cannot be fully treated, but some of the symptoms can be kept to a minimum with the right ointments, lifestyle habits and antibiotics. Eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis is just two of the natural ways that you can help combat your rosacea. If you practice a healthy way of living, you have a better chance of eliminating rosacea from your life.
